Please post anything here that helps us to share with the public (and ourselves) what we are doing and how we can improve.

There are a few things that are happening on campus and single-stream recycling is the main one. Since the beginning of this calendar year, Austin ISD has been under contract with Texas Disposal Systems (TDS) to have all of our single-stream recyclables picked up form campus in one of the bins provided. The other bins are taking everything in them to the landfill. These items can be identified in the list provided here http://www.greenschoolsolutions.com/recycle.php.

The district has also setup a system for collecting all organic food waste (including paper products) for composting. This is currently only available on the elementary campuses in the district. We hope to have our very own educational version of a compost process happening in the 300 wing courtyard this spring! It will take some time to get setup for usage, but once we do, it will provide soil for our garden spaces which will be in the same area and elsewhere around campus.

Other things happening on campus can be seen as a collective effort to clean-up after ourselves. This is a major task, but it can be avoided by not throwing the trash in the wrong place. It is just as easy to put trash in one place as it is another. Just get it in the correct place the first time. This is called pride and responsibility. Make our school a place you want to live in the 8-10 hours we all spend here a day, 5 days a week or more (for some of us).

We started the first of many work days on the campus to get our edible garden started. We had almost a dozen volunteers including 6 adults and nearly 10 students. The day started at 8am and we finished about 1pm. Pics will be in the media section.

The first dig in was to create the water pond and the first in the line of subsequent food forest sections. The dirt was displaced to a staging area to be used later and was placed in some cardboard that was saved to be used for just such an occasion.

The next work dates are:

Jan 26th 8am-1pm-Earthworks and plant gathering
Feb 22nd-Earthworks (time TBD...likely 9am-1pm)
Feb 23rd-dig and plant 8am-1pm)
